Quick answer. A recall by itself does not make a vehicle a lemon. It matters to a lemon law claim when the repair does not fix the problem after reasonable attempts, or when the manufacturer cannot complete the repair in a reasonable time. The rules differ by state. This is general information, not legal advice.

How a recall can matter to your claim

1

Find the recall

Search your make, model and year here, or check your VIN on NHTSA’s own page.

2

Check it was done

Ask the dealer in writing whether the recall repair was completed on your car.

3

Keep every repair order

Dates in, dates out, and what was done. Days in the shop can count toward your state’s threshold.

4

If the problem comes back

Repeat visits for the same defect are what a claim is built on. See your state’s rules.

Methodology and data source. The recall counts, charts and list on this page come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public recall file, copied into our own database each night. Counts are of recall campaigns (one campaign can cover several makes, models and years). The current year is a partial year. NHTSA covers safety defects and non-compliance campaigns; it does not include every manufacturer service bulletin, so a vehicle with no recall can still have a problem. Open recalls are repaired at no charge. We add no estimates to NHTSA's numbers on this page. Data last refreshed Oct 9, 2026.
